The mixer during a session

The mixer during a session

All of my recording work has been done through experimentation in the studio at Rickstones School (now New Rickstones Academy), trying different microphone placement techniques, EQs and outboard hardware.

Reccording Equipment and Technique

Mackie 8-bus 16-8

The Mackie 8-bus 16•8 has been the mixing desk I have used throughout my recording at Rickstones. I have also used outboard effects units, however these have been phased out due to the quality of plug-ins available through Apple’s Logic Pro software.

In terms of individual microphones, the standard Shure SM58 and Shure SM57 dynamics are almost indispensible.

For the more sensitive condenser microphones, the studio has a pair of Røde NT-1s, four or five Audio-Technica AT897 “shotguns” and one Neumann U87. Recently, the studio has expanded to using a Samson drum-microphone kit, so microphones can be freed up for other instruments when recording multiple tracks.
